Understanding Behaviour Begins with Understanding the Dog, the Handler, and Their Relationship

For over 40 years, I have worked with dogs of all breeds, ages and behavioural challenges, helping owners understand not only what their dog is doing, but why.

I believe every dog is an individual. Rather than expecting every dog to progress through the same standardized program, I adapt my approach to the dog's learning style, temperament and the owner's goals.

Whether you're raising a puppy, addressing behaviour concerns, selecting the right dog, or developing a service dog, my approach is customized to the individual dog and handler.

My work is built on a simple belief:

Behaviour is never random. Every behaviour has a cause.

Rather than relying on one-size-fits-all training methods, I begin by carefully assessing the factors influencing each dog's behaviour. Stress, environment, learning history, temperament, health and handler interactions can all play a role. Understanding those influences allows meaningful behaviour change to begin.

Over the years, I developed Howell's Canine Method and the Calm Behaviour Program to provide a structured, behaviour-first approach that focuses on understanding before intervention.
